SPORTS
Rio 2016 will be remembered as an instance of Olympic Games with a high number of sports world records achieved. It was also the first Olympic Games with a Refugee team that competed under the Olympic flag. Moreover, women represented 45% of the athletes.
One year later, the purported sports programs for children are nowhere to be found. The sports facilities, transferred to the city government, have their doors closed to the community and there are no education programs left over to spread Olympic values to the broader communities of Brazil.
However, not everything is as dark as the scenario might paint them. Sports (not only football) is part of everyday life in Rio de Janeiro. People have a culture of practicing sport in every free minute of the day. There are many community-based projects that inspire a better way of life through sports. However most of them do not have state financing; in fact, many are financed by local athletes. The team met incredible people that give back, both financially and in terms of time to provide children with opportunities through sports.
