An increase of tourism is an important facet of evaluating the success of an Olympic Games. In the case of Rio 2016, local tourism increased significantly; however, there are not yet any impact studies to evaluate how much it impacted tourism in the rest of the country. There is no doubt that Rio city branding became iconic globally, but one year later that is not reflected in the streets.
Rio 2016 had a huge challenge to tourism; the preconception of violence in South America. One year later, Rio 2016 was analyzed as successful in that regard.
Tourism also impacted in the idea of how to consider favelas. Mega-events started a phenomenon called “favela tourism.” Organized tours go into favelas with local guides to showcase their “eccentricity”. One of the biggest problems with this is the idea of communities receiving profits at expense of showing off their private lives as entertainment.
